Sometimes you get to certain places that are so gorgeous or so special that you’d prefer to stay longer than the intended trip. That was definitely the case when we arrived at the River Kwai Jungle rafts.
When you’re in or near the area of Kanchanaburi (and the Bridge over the River Kwai) than it is definitely worth staying here a couple of days.
Sadly we only had one night before we had to move to the next destination. But you can’t have it all I guess. The hotel (or floatel) floats on the water and is been build in the most sustainable way. That also means you might lack some things in modern comfort. There is no electricity for one and the shower was cold when we were there. Don’t expect a great deal of luxury, it is the area and the surroundings that make this a magical experience.
The room is basic but you do have your own toilet and bathroom. Like I said there is no electricity and at night the entire hotel is lit by oillamps which gives it a very special atmosphere. And like I said no water from the shower. Also reading a book with electricity is a bit of a challenge. You’ve been warned. Make sure you charge all your battery stuff before going here or have a mobile charger.
You can swim in the river but the currants are especially heavy and strong here. You can even see it if you take a look at the pictures. Wearing a lifevest when you go for a dive is a must. You can dive into the river on one end of the hotel and than float down to the other end where you can climb ‘on board’ again (and you can repeat endlessly). It’s lovely to cool down but be aware that swimming against the stream is impossible. At least it was when we were there. It might vary from day to day. Not sure.
All in all it was a lovely experience and definitely worth a visit when you’re in the area.
