French toast with strawberries and ricotta |

Growing up I was quick to start working. I must have been 13 when I got my first (illegal) job on saturday in a local shop. I totally hated it, because a: they wanted me to wear a skirt and I am a no-skirt woman and b. I hate to sell bra’s… I mean, seriously I was 13. How can you let a 13 year old girl, who doesn’t need a bra herself, sell those things to any customers. Funny thing is that it was usually the men who came to me for help as they had to buy one for their wives…

Needless to say I did not last long there… Another – much more fun – saturday job was picking strawberries. It paid a lousy 1 guilder for picking an entire crate of strawberries, so you had to work real hard to make any decent sum of money but at the age of 13 a few guilders was quite something. Plus it had the added bonus of eating wonderfully juicy strawberries, straight from the bush. The only downside to the strawberry picking was that you had to be on your knees all day long. Raspberries or red currants where easier to do but also contained way more bugs.

And with bugs I mean the creepy and crawly type. So eating the raspberries straight from the bush was heavenly but you always had to be aware of any insects that might be lurking inside. These days getting strawberries is much easier. I just go to the market and get a kilo or so.. 🙂 I do think that the flavor of the strawberries has changed. It could be me but in my memory the strawberries where always so much sweeter! While you can buy strawberries year round these days they are truly only really delicious at this time of year when they come from the cold ground and have soaked up the sunshine.. And than to eat them on this delicious crispy and sweet french toast.
